The Sudoku fall like leaves from the tree.
XXXIX finished.

Sunday

I killed Sudoku number XXXII with great ease and no regrets.

My Excel Sudoku Whacker seems to have gained more knowledge than I built into it.

I recognized the Classic [1,5,8];[5,8];[5,8] situation in a big-block, not just in a row, and then recognized a double layer of the same situation of the in another big block.

I filled in the "1" at the first situation, and the puzzle collapsed like a deck of cards.

I also started reducing some of the background color tricks, and it made reading the puzzle easier.

2008-11-12

Wednesday

I solved Sudoku number XXXI using my Excel Sudoku Puzzle Master Whacker. This was a level 5 difficulty. I am the master!

Yeehaw!

Home Grown Tomatoes and other Plants

The Farmer's Market on Rutherford Road. ***
Highway 290 Mater-Man diagonally across from the Lil Rebel.****
Highway 123 Behind LJSSFS.
Highway 25, 1/2 mile off Washington Avenue.
Warehouse Road off Rutherford.
Allen St behind Old K-Mart off Mills Avenue.*****
Reid School Road where Roberts Road branches off.

2008-09-12 I gave the 290 Mater-Man some Siberian Tomato seeds. So we can have some of
them next spring.

2009-03-21 Planted my Siberian tomatoes in 3 paper egg cartons. 3 to 4 seeds per spot. Used Miracle grow potting soil.
Also planted my milkweeds in the back yard to attract monarch butterflies. Had three real plants and a pack of seed.

2009-03-27 First tomato plants, 56 of 125 seeds, have emerged. Now come the responsibility of keeping them alive. Milkweeds not up yet.

2009-06-17 Thee were 56 tomato seedling, at about 2" I transferred them from the egg cartons to Dixie cups, I think I injured their taproots when I did this. Next time start off in final resting place so no transplanting is involved. As of today only one remains alive. It is joined by four better boys I got at Hodepo's. The Betterboys are twice the size of the Siberian. None of the milkweed seeds emerged. only two of the three live milkweeds are alive. One twice the size of the other, I can't even grow weeds.

2009-07-06 the four tomatoes I got at Hodepo are looking OK, but thin. I would suggest starting the seeds in 5 gallon buckets next time, and real potting soil. And I do have a survivor, a Siberian tomato survived the move outdoors. It is as tall as the Hodepo-maters, but thinner and has had no blooms. The Hodepo-maters have 6 maters about 1 1/2" in diameter.

Paint Tips and Tricks

To set the "Paint able" area of the screen save a file with the "Paint able" area set to 100x100. I like to name such a files "$ clean" so they are at the top of the pile.

To capture a image at or near your screen proportions.

Get the image into Paint, enlarge or shrink so it is centered and visible on your screen.

Then use a sewing thread stretch it diagonally from corner to corner of your screen. Use the paint tool "Brush" to place a dot outside the border where the string passes through the image border.

The two dots form the opposing corners of a rectangle at roughly the same proportions as your screen.

Using the rectangular "Select" tool copy the image using the dots as diagonal corners and then paste back into a new paint page.

Save it away for use as desktop screen saver.

I suppose I will quit counting someday. How many crossword puzzles have I done? How many Have I written? I try writing them in Doctors waiting rooms as they rarely have one for me to work.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks

Duplicate sequence, pick object, touch [M], touch[Ctrl.](see plus sign appear), start moving object along the desired axis, enter dimension to move object and hit [Enter].

Sketch Up for today: Punching a hole. Draw circle on surface, select "push/Pull tool", select the surface inside the circle, move into the object, enter thickness of material, this extrudes circle to opposite surface, and gives a hole.

Drew an ogee moulding, and a mitered corner. Quite a challenge. Later learned how to do this with "Follow Me' tool, it makes it child's play.

I was having trouble picking objects, I would be on an object, and pick it, but it would pick and object beyond the surface I was on. With some advice, I cut the graphics generator off, rebooted, and it behaves properly.

E-Copy Tips and Tricks

In [View All], [Ctrl] and pick images you want to print. Let [Ctrl} up. Pick and hold one the selected images and slide all of them to the [Print Icon] and they are printed.

To get that zoom to be same size as 11x17 landscape. take a black sewing thread several inches longer than the diagonal dimension of your screen, tie a not half way of its length. Determine the angle of a diagonal across a 11x17 paper by folding it diagonally. tape the string across your screen at the angle determined with the knot being at the center of the screen. . Center the area for printing on the knot, then pick the corners on the string. it will be proportional to the 11x 17 paper.
You might consider marking the points on the border of your screen with a sharpie, and only put the string on when needed.

Sudoki tally is now XXIV.

Now back to solving the phone problem. The last attempt of isolating the old analog microphone did not work. I suspect bad soldering. Gonna check it out with a volt meter and see whats up.

Mad scientist in SC

All connection checked out. Hmmm a mystery as to why it does not work.

2008-07-09

2008-07-09 Wednesday

Well, the phone gizmo did not work completely. Sound worked but microphone did not. I looked inside for bad connections, and the soldering I had done broke off due to crystallization. I'll have to re do that.

I inquired about more handsets, and they were all gone. Sent to PCI. Comment was they were analog and did not work with new digital system.

Ah Ha! That would explain why microphone did not work. It was analog. All I need to do is just hot wire past old analog microphone to get to new digital microphone, should make it work.

I did this switch over tonight. Will know tomorrow if this solved the problem.

Still at XXII Sudoki.

1943 Cronicals of a Plugger

1943 Mom screamed for two days.
But, hey it was worth it.
I arrived!

Strange, I don't seem to remember this day at all?

This event happened in Coleman Hospital in the fair city of Travelers Rest SC. The scream was heard across three counties.

Chuck was here. It was January 26 1943 during the big war WII.
Vera was living with Mrs Adams, Jerry Adams mother, what was her name? Jerry and his sister went to Taylors High School with Chuck. We lived in the rockhouse on Piedmont Park Road, the Wampo place now with the pond and way too many canadian geese. Gary Wampo and his mother live there now Gary goes to Mountain Creek Baptist Church.

1944 - 1 Year old. I was just as cute as a bug.

1945 - 2 Years old. I saw Beauford coming down the dirt drive way fence on the left weeds in the fields both sides of the road he was using a cane. Back from the war. Missing lower part of his left leg. This was at the Parham place next to Mountain Creek Baptist Church. The place is still there I think. it was a renter house way down the hill from the road close to the tree line. This the house where in I first saw a scorpion. It was as big as a bore hog and had a worse disposition. I was caught eating raw fat-back meat by Ma.

1946 - 3 Years old. I remember the Mailman delivering a set of Britannica Juniors to our house up on some street at Marietta. I went with Ma down to the road, had to jump the ditch to get to the mail/truck/car and i being a manly-man took way too many of the books and fell into the ditch. a good days work.

Over the yeas i made good use of the books as mountains for a wind up bulldozer i got at Christmas. i would let that sucker climb the mountain of knowledge.

That house at Marietta. I remember large trees in the yard. Many roots to play among, building roads from the hollows between the roots which were filled with sand. Seems we may have had a red-bone hound dog. The house is still there. i should try to capture it off google...

1947 - 4 Years old.

1948, 5 year old
, three years after the war, Dad may have been going to Bouleva watch making school. It was located down close to the old train depot, at least i think that was where it was. Things get misty over time. I remember a large red brick building, similar to Greenville high school where it was located. Big open room a lot of veterans learning the trade. Having dad explain how an analog device they had could tell you whether a watch was running slow and how to adjust the escape mechanism to fix it. Did you know you could put 50,000 of the screws that were in a ladies Bouleva watch's balance wheel in a thimble? They were tiny. Dad gave me a challenge when I was in high school, to remove a broken balance wheel from a ladies Bouleva watch, the end of the shaft was bent over or broken off. I was to remove the wheel from the shaft, make a new shaft from scratch, remount the wheel on the shaft, and reinstall the it back into the watch. I did it. Watch ran OK!

1949 Started grade school at ??? on White Horse Road, went there a short time, brick building, dusty school yard, swings, class room, black board learning to spell "tion" words, teacher sasid to pronounce as "tion" as "shun" then I spelled words with "shun" for years. The brain is a dangerous thing.

My Dad worked at Dunean Mill and later at Union Bleachery.  We lived on Piedmont Highway next to Dewey Turbeville's gas station down by the creek across from Martha Lue Irvings Dad's place, Irving's Used Cars. We would go to the baseball games at Henry Field and at Meadowbrook Park. I especially remember having chili hotdogs and Tom's Big Orange drinks. Tommy LaSorda was with the Greenville Spinners in 1949 so I may have seen him play. He did make a play for and married a Greenville girl, Joan Miller.

1950

1961 First job out of High School. They sent me to a Steel-Drafting school in Greensboro NC for three or four months before I actually started to work. I landed this juicy position because I was linked into a Mechanical Drafting Teacher at Wade Hampton High School, who had mentioned the position in the months prior to my graduation in May. My father died that July and I became head of the household and needed gainful employment. I did not even have my drivers license yet.I remembered that my old friend Bobby Johnson's' father worked at Greenville Steel (as treasure). I contacted Billy Woods, friend of Bobby Johnson, who gave me Mr. Johnson's' phone number and I interviewed with the Chief Draftsman Charles Garrett and was hired.

The Vaugh-Tate Trio

Ah, the old Garage Band. The Vaughn -Tate Trio.

I bought my first guitar from Donald Coleman for 50 cents.

My cousin. Crawford, taught me three cords, and I thought I could play anything.

A guy, Jack Goodson, Who was higher up in the Miss Greer Pageant at Greer SC, worked with me. He had heard me talking about my musical abilities. I had been reprimanded a coupala times at work for whistling my back ground R and B version of the Muzak they were playing. I did not really notice I was doing it. They said it was distracting to the other workers. Any way, Jack asked if I would like to bring my group to Greer to the auditorium where the Miss Greer pageant leading to Miss South Carolina Pageant was having the local pageant. They need a group to fill in while the girls were changing clothes. So I approached my cousin about this and he flipped out at the opportunity. He had written a song "Muddy River" and he wanted the world to know of his talent. I told Jack that we were his saviors.

Me along with Crawford's father, Harry, formed the "Vaughn Tate Trio".

We practiced three songs so many times we could play them backwards.

The night of the pageant, we arrived, set up, went on, played our three songs, and to our astonishment got a standing ovation! The Emcee had us play another song as and encore. It unreal. The world was our oyster!

Ah, but that was the only stand of the Vaughn Tate Trio, I went on to Clemson, Crawford ran another rock ground aground. Harry went back to carpentry, and the whole thing faded away.

I would some times sit in The Cobra Club and listen to Crawford and his new group play and dodging beer bottles and bullets While waiting for my Clemson room-mate to return from his hot dates.

Crawford's group opened for the Monkeys at Greenville Auditorium, he had pictures, and a few 45's that they cut, but, it too all faded away.

Harry died, Crawford married a religious girl who showed him the way to Christ. This put a stop to the consumption of cheap red wine, foe-lee-ole.

He has a variety of medical problems now but can still play a mean Electric Blues Piano.

Maybe next time...

I ride to and fro to my part-time job and in secret play Suzuki PIPE HUMMING Harmonicas in C and A, to the throbbing sound of Omar Ken Dykes' "Jimmy Reed Highway."

My UBS light, I customised it by adding a white BIC pen barrel on the end of the light. The light shines down the length of the barrel making the entire length glow. Looks like a baby florescent light. This is to spread the light out, light the entire keyboard, soften it, and cut down on the glare. Seems to be working OK.

The Cicada are singing tonight!

Cicada, large, noise-producing insect of the order Homoptera, with a stout body, a wide, blunt head, protruding eyes, and two pairs of membranous wings. The front wings, which are longer than the rear pair, extend beyond the insect's abdomen. Male cicadas have plate like membranes on the thorax, which they vibrate like drum heads, producing a loud, shrill sound. Females of most species are mute. Characteristic songs are produced by members of different species; each also produces a noise indicating irritation, and some have special courtship songs.

2008-06-29 Sunday

Well the feast continued at breakfast. Canadian Bacon, "two egg" Omer-rets, toast, $2.49 Eight O'clock coffee (thanks Gary), Shrimp and Grits(Grits, butter, 6 garlic shrimp left over from last night cut up, some Coffee Mate to act as cream, and a dash of fresh ground black pepper).

It rained last night and the grass jumped out of the ground, it is amazing stuff. Refilled the birdbath due to an orgy organized by Walking Bird. Walking Bird arrives by foot, crosses the road, comes under the fence at the gate, walks into the backyard, and starts stomping around. I understand the stomping and hopping around mimics rain falling and earthworms come to the surface to save drowning. Walking bird ate, had a bath with several other robins watching his antics, jumped down and walked toward the gate, getting a few more snacks along the way, under the gate, and across the road to who knows where.

I also found a seven year Cicada! That means they should be singing to night. The long dry spell and then the shower may have triggered their instinct to come out. I hope they are singing to night.

The rearrange Mandevilla is very happy in its new location and is putting on a show, about 20 blooms now.

And here is the Blackberry pie recipe. This may be the best blackberry pie I have ever had.

Ingredients

4 cups fresh blackberries
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 large egg
1 cup sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
6 tablespoons butter, melted
Whipped cream (optional)
Garnish: fresh mint sprig

Preparation

Preheat oven to 375°. Place blackberries in a lightly greased 8-inch square baking dish; sprinkle with lemon juice. Stir together egg, sugar, and flour in a medium bowl until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle over fruit. Drizzle melted butter over topping. Bake at 375° for 35 minutes or until lightly browned and bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream, if desired. Garnish with fresh mint sprig, if desired.

Buttery Maple Low Sugar Pancake Syrup

I jar of dark Karo syrup
!/2 oz of imitation butter flavoring
1/4 teaspoon of imitation maple flavoring

Preparation

Pour all of syrup in a large bowl, preferably with a pour spout.
Add other ingredients to syrup.
Stir until the Gargoyles cry for mercy.
Pour mixture back into original container.
Enjoy!

New Years Day Feast

Bush's Best black eyed peas. Two cans 15.8 oz. Open heat and simmer, minimize stirring to keep peas whole. Don't add anything to these.

Allen's "Turnip Greens no salt Added". Two cans 14 oz. Again don't add anything to these.

Four pork chops, about 1/4" thick. Flour with plain flour and again don't add any thing to the flour. Rinse chops lay on bed of flour, spoon flour on the edges and on top, press the flour into the top side of the chops with the back of the spoon to make it stick, the bottom will get coated at the same time. Cook in hot oil, i/2 stick Crisco, 1 tablespoon butter, and 1/3 c Crisco vegetable oil. on mid heat (#5) sorta hot to brown coating I think like 5 minutes each side, drain on paper rowel. Cook only two at as time to get a quality job, with no crowding of the chops in the pan.

One pone of Martha White White cornbread. Use southern cornbread receipt, 1 egg, 1/3 c veg oil, 1 1/3 c milk, 2 c M W white CB mix. Zap 2 TSP butter in MW like only 5 seconds to get it to a plastic state so you can grease the pan with it. Lay the butter on heavy cause you don't want no sticking.

Buttermilk would be nice with this.

Still at XX Sudoku, I continue to edit my solver, but still feel like something is missing. It must be smarter than it is.

So I started the day at Hairdee's. Steak Bisquets.

Then its downtown to the new Farmers Market. There I found a lady who was sort of interested in making a pendent per my secret design. We are to converse ovet the net.

I purchased 1 and 3/4 pounds of fresh McCellanville shrimp, jumbo size and 4 cups of fresh blackberries.

From there I went to the old Farmers Market close to home, looking for corn. They only had bi-color corn, I only wanted yellow corn. On my next trip I let Walter provide the yellow corn.

These ingredients let to one ass-kicking meal.

I shelled and de-veined the shrimp and cooked it by sautéing it in peanut oil, with, fresh black pepper, garlic salt, and butter.

I boiled the corn for about and hour.

I made blackberry cobbler with sugar-cookie crust.

Nuked two potatoes, and let the feast begin.

The meal was fantastic! I added some Trappy's Bull Lousiaiana Hot Sause on my shrimp, laudy mercy son, mighty good.

Yousir, yousir, it was so good it made you want to slap your mammy for not learning how to cook like that.

Big arms is to come over Sunday and play squeaky floors with me.

Light rain, windy.

Still at XV Sudoku.
My solver worked ok on my first attempt, but boy is it dumb.
It evaluates wheather a number has been used in the north-south and east-west direction or in the mini-block where the cell resides, of each individual cell.
It displays those numbers not used in thoes areas.
Some times it shows only one number not used so that is the answer.
My last tweek was to cut off surounding mini-cells if the cell had a number in it, to lessen the confusion.

Excell has a limit of three conditional formats, so furthur tweeking will be a challange.

Problem at work, I suggested a soloution, which they used. Cool. For my future reference, insert blocked by pipe, chemically set rod in panel weld to column flange.

I keep feeling like there are secrets to sudoku solving I have not noticed. I have searched but most people are looking for money no to help out and old guy.
